majority indigenous African population - a situation which created simmering resentment, ethnic tension and eventually civil war.
Here's some current news from Africa that relates to a certain little-by-little fulfillment of an end-time prophecy in Isaiah (at chapter 3 verse12).  The BBC reports that Liberia has elected a new president - (a woman) Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf.

After 14 years of war, Liberia has just elected a new president - Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf.

But she inherits a country in ruins. Just about anything of any value was either destroyed or looted during the fighting.

One exception is the Firestone rubber plantation - the largest in the world, founded in 1926.

Last year, rubber accounted for 90% of Liberia's official exports.
War and conflict

The country's most recent troubles can be traced back to the 1980 coup in which a group of army officers of indigenous tribal origin led by Samuel Doe seized power.

Doe forged closer ties with the United States, visiting President Reagan in Washington, and received substantial amounts of aid in return for exclusive trade agreements.

His authoritarian regime banned newspapers and political parties, and held staged elections.
Charles Taylor

Civil war broke out in 1989. In September 1990, Doe was overthrown and brutally executed by forces loyal to rebel faction leader Yornie Johnson.

The war dragged on until 1996, and a year later warlord Charles Taylor (left) was elected president. His autocratic rule saw opposition leaders targeted for assassination.

War broke out again in 1999. Taylor was eventually ousted in 2003, and exiled to Nigeria.
